The Ruins of Dragonport by arsheesh The Ruins of Dragonport by arsheesh
This was my submission to a map challenge over at the Cartographers Guild. The challenge was to map an area of interest located on a particular hex map. I chose to map Hex F2, "The Ruins of Dragonport", in order to try my hand at a town map. Learned a lot making this map, and there are definitely some things I will do differently the next time around. That said, overall I'm pleased with the results.

arsheesh, how did you manage to get those waves done like that?Clap  That "spray" effect you've achieved is remarkable; I usually use the smudge tool, but that obviously cannot achieve the same results you have here.

Thanks, glad you like it.  I created the sea foam using a grunge/splatter brush set to different sizes.  I then erased frontal portion of the waves and on a separate layer, with a soft round brush set to overlay, drew in some shadows right in front of the waves.  Finally, I took a soft round brush set to medium low opacity and low px (1-2, can't remember now), and drew in some more detail for the shadow water - such as the hint of an outline of where the water meets the shore, or a few lines extending from shallow waves that have crashed etc.

The detail work was a bit time consuming I should add.  I was using several reference images of top down waves and was attempting to create a fairly accurate representation of them.

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

awesome job, love the scale.  Is it mostly hand drawn?

Thanks thesoultorn.  Portions of it were hand drawn (such as the waves and the shading and contours of the land and cliffs), but a lot of it was blending patterns and using various filters to achieve the effect I wanted.

Very kind of you Sir!  I learned a lot making this map.  At some point I intend to try a photo-realistic metropolis, but I know it will be a huge undertaking and haven't yet found the time to do so.

That's just astounding. You throw in so many little touches: the lighthouse, the waves... it's an impressive piece of work. Did you win the challenge?

Thanks Savannah. No I haven't, been working on them for a while trying to get them just right. This one of the better trial runs. I want to play around with town/city maps a bit more, I think there are some things that could be improved upon. Once I'm satisfied I may write up a town/city tutorial for GIMP (since there are like, none, on offer at the Guild at the moment) that includes a walk through on the trees.

Cool - I always have trouble with trees, and I really like how yours came out here. Too bad I don't use GIMP, but I'm sure I can improvise :P

Do you use photoshop? I think it would actually be easier to achieve a result similar to this in Photoshop (check out Pasis tutorial).

I really like the foam on the waves, looks absolutely convincing! You've also done a very good job on the cliffs, the piers... and most of the other details :D Very inspiring, I think I'll have to take your map as an example for my next city map :aww:
The only thing I would do differently is the green of the landscape - it looks a bit to uniformly all in all. Nevertheless a great map :)

That's high praise Lunded, especially given that I've used your city maps as references when thinking about how to plan this map. You are right about the landscape, ideally I would have included more farms and different colored fields outside of the town walls but it really came down to not enough time. I have a paper I have to get to my supervisor and so I just needed to finish this.

Well I've read through several tutorials over at the Cartographers Guild and borrowed tips here and there. But at the moment all of the city and town maps are written for Photoshop and this map was made in GIMP. So much of this was trial and error for me.

Beautiful map...every little thing on it looks worth exploring, which is a pretty excellent sign you've done good work. It reminds me a bit of the map of Threshold in the old X1 box set (way back in the eighties)...which is kind of the benchmark by which I judge all other maps! Great job.

I went to the Cartographer's Guild to check out that contest...it sounded amazing...but couldn't find any mention of it. Has it been taken down?

Those elevations! The cliffs! The waves! The shore and beach! Those shadows! Even the trees and buildings and walls and wooden docks and general layout -- all of it stunning!

I guess if I had one complaint, the roads are too "perfect." They look like lines drawn on a computer. They only stick out because everything else is so wonderful.

Fantastic!
