Unnamed Commission by arsheesh Unnamed Commission by arsheesh
This was a commission done for a client seeking an alternate version of a map for a novel he was writing. This is actually only a small mock up of what the final piece will look like, but since the client has not yet finished, much less published his novel, I decided not to release the actual final map for the time being. The client hasn't yet named the geographical region depicted by the map (hence the "unnamed" commission). Another quirk is the dessert in the northern section of the world. This oddly placed feature is the result of some arcane catastrophe.

That height map was done in GIMP, with erosion and rivers added in Wilbur. Coloring and most labeling were done in GIMP as well (though the curved text was done in Inkscape).

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

I like the realistic style to it. Out of curiosity, since you did much of this in the GIMP (the program I use), what all did you do for it? Did you have textures or a brush or what? If so, unless you made them yourself, where did you get textures and are they stock?

Actually there are no textures in this piece. The height map was created from cloud layers which I then molded (using a soft airbrush set to low opacity) to shape terrain features such as mountains and highlands. The texture comes from the erosion filters of Wilbur. I used a gradient map to do the coloring. The trees I created through bumpmapping some HSV noise, coloring it, placing a Black layer mask over the trees layer, and then painting the layer mask (with a small soft round brush set to scatter) where I wanted the trees to appear.

Dam great work you made there. the way you made up the mountains and the forest looking very great.
You should make a tutorial out of this. The Tutorials on [link] are well but especial for GIMP and a terrain detailed and realistic looking as yours may be missing. It seems you have some extra steps and finishing tricks I never found out in GIMP. How do you got the base highmas into willbour and later into GIMP again with all the outline, mountains and riverbeds on the right place the story outhor required them? I tried Wilbur years ago but never found a newer version .

Great Work!

Thanks BToT! Wow, a tutorial huh? Well, I should let you know now that some of the methods I'm using (e.g. color-mapping) are difficult to get used to at first, and even now that I've made several maps using these methods I still find the whole process highly time consuming. That said, if there's enough interest perhaps I'll write up a tutorial at some point.

As for your question about the height map, I copied and pasted the clouds for the Mts in place and then sculpted them. Rivers are a bit more tricky in that Wilbur just places these wherever you have the lowest terrain. So if river placement is an issue you can sculpt the height map, placing valleys wherever you want there to be rivers. However fortunately for me the author wasn't too particular about the rivers so I didn't have to worry about that.

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

Hmmm, I had not thought of using those techniques. I will have to try some and see if I can't figure it out.

Thanks Zach! With this map I feel like I've finally managed to more or less establish a style of mapping that I am comfortable with.
