Arkhemia Commission by arsheesh Arkhemia Commission by arsheesh
Here is a commission I did for fantasy author V.R.Cardoso for his forthcoming novel The Dragon Hunter and the Mage: Wounds in the Sky Book 1. Although I've done many commissions in a photorealistic style, this was my first hand drawn commission, which was a nice change of pace. My client requested that the color scheme be similar to the vibrant Dragon Age maps. I digitally painted the map in Photoshop Elements, labeled it in Inkscape, and did a handful of other things to it in GIMP. Hope you enjoy.

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

Hi,

I'm publishing a book for Pathfinder under the OGL.  I'm looking to commission a single map, and then have the map divided into four sections.

1.  The single map would be used for a fold out.
2.  The single map would need to be cut into four sections for easy inclusion into my book.

I can email you a copy of the rough sketches I have of the map needed.

I'm currently reaching out to multiple artists, getting bids.  I plan on making a decision by March 17th, 2017.

If you are interested, please let me know what details you need from me in order to quote a price?

Thank you,

Bo

Hi Bo, thanks for considering me for your project.  As to details, things that would be helpful to know include the following:

1.  What type of map are you interested in (e.g. is this a world map, a regional map, a city or town map etc.);
2.  What style are you looking for (I've done work in both a hand drawn and a photorealistic style);
3.  If this is to be a hand drawn map, do you desire to have the locations (e.g. cities, forts, towers etc.) individually hand illustrated or will simple representational icons (like dots or squares) do?
4.  How large does the map need to be (i.e. it's full print-out size)?
5.  What sort of licensing/copyright arrangement do you desire?
6.  What is your deadline for this project.

The last question is important because at the moment I'm currently working on several projects and as such any new project will likely take me around 6 weeks to complete.  Please feel free to email me at arsheesh2@gmail.com with the details.

Kind regards,
-Tad

Hi Tad,

1.  The style of map above looks great to me.   It would be a national map.  I will email you a rough sketch of the map I've drawn.
2.  I'm not sure what style that the above is, but that is what I'm looking for.
3.  The above style is perfect.
4.  It needs to be big enough for a double page (left and right page) for a book I'm writing.
5.  I want rights to use your creation in any of my future published works.
6.  I'm looking to make a decision on which Artist I will be using by mid March, and I will need the map by June of 2017.

My best,

Bo

This is seriously awesome. I'm looking for ideas, or an artist because I'm not one, to create a map of a dystopian Earth where only Australia and New Zealand are inhabitable. Can you pm with details re commission for such a project.

My apologies for the very late reply Zedul, I've been busy with family matters of late and am just now getting around to checking back in at DA.  My rates very somewhat based on the scope of the project.  I'd need to know a bit about the details of a project to give a quote.  If you are still interested in commissioning a map however feel free to email me (arsheesh at gmail dot com) with the details and we'll go from there.

Cheers,
-Arsheesh

Hey Zedul, just checking in again, I don't think I ever received your email.  Just checking but did you send it to arsheesh2 [at] gmail [dot] com?

Hmm, that's odd, I don't think I received it.  Would you feel comfortable sending my your email in a private note here at DA?  It might be easier if I contact you.

I'm really happy with this map :) It already looks gorgeous on my website, but I can't wait to see it inside the book.
Once again, thanks for the great work, Tad.

Nice! I especially like the isometric mountains. Will he be printing it as a color map?

Thanks FeroceFV!  I believe so.  I created the map with a resolution slightly larger than 5x7" so that it could be printed for use inside a novel.  However I am not sure if it will be in color, or if that will be reserved for a website.

Nice! How do you go about rebalancing the shading for print? Or do you just leave it as is?

I'm not quite sure I understand the question.  Would you mind clarifying what you mean by "re-balancing the shading"?

Well, when I print out many of my maps, they tend to be much darker and a bit muddier than they look on the screen. I often find that I have to re-work the image layer by layer, playing with the brightness, opacity, and coloring as I go, to get something that looks as good in print. For example, some of your rivers and land, while easy to distinguish here on a screen, would likely blend together if you desaturated the whole image and printed it in greyscale. I was wondering what you do to avoid that kind of issue.

What color space are you printing the maps out in?  GIMP by default saves all files in RGB color space which is best for screen viewing.  However if you want to print the image it is best to convert the file to CMYK.  Photoshop CS comes with this feature but GIMP doesn't come with it out of the box.  You can however get a plugin that will allow you to convert the color space to CMYK.  But be sure to save back up-files because this is not a non-destructive process, once you make the conversion it's a done deal.

Good point, and that may be a big part of it too. It may also be true that I shouldn't try printing my maps on regular computer paper. Thanks for the tip! I'll try it out.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there is a bit of variance between colors on various monitors, so you might want to see how your maps appear on other computer screens as well.

I don't know if it will be possible to have it in color on the paperback, but I'll definitely find a way to sell it as a poster. I know I want one hanging on the wall.
